Royton food store plan takes major step forward

The delivery of a new Lidl supermarket in Royton, Greater Manchester, has advanced with the completion of the agreement to transfer the land.

Constriction work on the development now looks set to start within months, with the new store due to open during 2016.

Oldham Council unanimously approved the plans for the new 22,000 sq. ft. Lidl earlier this year. The development, which also includes a new 100 place short stay car park, will regenerate the former Royton Assembly Hall site.

The proposals to build the supermarket were first announced after Oldham Council agreed to the sale of some council-owned land to bring forward the regeneration of the site.

The development has been delivered in partnership with the Barnsley based retail specialists Dransfield Properties Ltd.

Lidl says that between 25 and 30 new jobs will be created at the new Royton store.

Andrew Malley, Retail Property Director for Dransfield Properties, said: “We are delighted that the land transfer has now been completed and work can start later in the year on the new Lidl store in Royton.

“Dransfield Properties has worked with Lidl on many developments in our company’s 23 year history and we are confident the new store will be extremely well received in Royton town centre.”

Jim McMahon, Oldham Council Leader, said: “The council and Dransfield have been working hard to breathe new life into Royton’s district centre – and we hope this deal with prove to be a catalyst for further development in the area.

“We are constantly striving to attract new investment, businesses and employment into the area – and when welcome interest arises we urge those businesses, like Lidl, to commit new jobs to local people.

“The arrival of the food store, from a well-known international retailer, will increase footfall to Royton, and we also feel it will complement the current retail offer, in particular the weekly market.”
