Two Brighton businesses forced to relocate due to risk of collapse

Businesses are being asked to relocate from Brighton seafront as some of the Victorian buildings are at a high risk of collapse.

Brighton & Hove council has said the entire length of the Madeira Terraces should be closed as it suspects the corrosion of steel beams in the concrete could cause the buildings to topple.

According to the BBC, two businesses have been asked to move from the properties.

The council said it was working with both businesses, named as JAG Gallery and Studio 284, to relocate them.

Simon Kirby, Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven MP, said: “It is possible to maintain historic buildings within the budget. The council needs to pull its finger out and get on with it.”

The council said: “The terraces are effectively at the end of their life and any further maintenance would require major dismantling akin to rebuilding.”
