Meadowhall will undergo a £50m interior design refurbishment.

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff wins major contract with Sheffield's Meadowhall

As part of a £50m interior design refurbishment, Sheffield shopping and leisure complex Meadowhall has appointed WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff has been appointed to provide multidisciplinary engineering services.

This project is just the latest collaboration between WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff and the property investment company British Land, which adds to the growing portfolio of retail projects in the UK and overseas for the professional services consultancy.

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff is providing building services, structural, fire engineering, vertical transportation and acoustic services. BDP is the architect.

Marking the 25th anniversary of Meadowhall Shopping Centre, which attracts more than 25 million shoppers a year, the refurbishment will see the mall be transformed into a modern environment where some retailers benefit from double height shop fronts that create additional retail space.

This will be achieved by an innovative design that allows the relocation of major service gantries away from their current location above shops into the roof without compromising vital fire escapes.

In addition, existing ventilation has been removed so that the mall could be naturally ventilated for both fresh air and smoke ventilation, which will save future energy and operational costs.

Adam Selvey, WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff senior technical director, said: “We are delighted to be working on this project with British Land having had some great successes on numerous retail and commercial projects with them, such as the Leadenhall Building in City of London. Our engineering team’s input on the project is instrumental to British Land’s vision to create a modern shopping centre environment.”

To ensure construction starts on site in the third quarter of 2015, extensive phasing and sequencing of the works has already been undertaken. Customers will remain unaffected.

The refurbishment is due to be completed by the end of 2017 on the UK’s fourth largest shopping centre, which comprises 310 shops, 50 restaurants and cafes and a multi-screen cinema.

WSP|Parsons Brinckerhoff employs more than 270 in its Leeds office.
