£1bn regeneration plans proposed for Ilford town centre

Ilford town centre could be transformed by £1bn of investment to regenerate the town, supporting the economic boost brought by Crossrail.

The council has proposed plans that, over the next six years, will involve the addition of more than 2,000 homes, including 500 affordable homes and at least 1,500 new jobs by 2021.

The area would also undergo street improvements transforming the area around Ilford Station following £5m funding from the Transport for London’s Crossrail Complementary Measures to improve Ilford, Seven Kings, Goodmayes and Chadwell Heath stations.

The council also plans to invest a further £2m towards work to enhance these areas, from money received from developer contributions

Councillor Helen Coomb, Cabinet Member for Economy, Planning and Regeneration said, “We want to deliver lasting change through ambitious and far-reaching regeneration to completely transform Ilford Town Centre. Our plans would breathe new life into Ilford, and put it firmly on the map as part of the wider regeneration of East London.

“The plans would improve the town centre’s open spaces and make the shopping and leisure areas more vibrant, creating new jobs, supporting stronger businesses and strengthening the local economy. The future is very, very bright for Ilford.”

In addition the Council will continue to look at external funding opportunities to further improve the quality of Ilford as a key metropolitan town centre. Development across the town centre will generate major financial contributions to the Council from the Community Infrastructure Levy, New Homes Bonus and increased Council Tax and Business Rates.
