Knutsford resort gets the go-ahead on new gym and cafe

Planning permission has been granted for The Mere Golf Resort & Spa in Cheshire to expand its health and fitness facilities.

New space at the Knutsford facility, to be known as The Cube, was designed by Manchester-based Mather & Co. and fellow Knutsford firm WhiteBox Architecture. It will comprise 5,650 sq ft of space, including two studio areas with new equipment, changing facilities and a cafe.

Mark Boler, a co-owner and CEO of The Mere Golf Resort & Spa, commented: “Mather & Co. and WhiteBox Architecture have helped us realise our vision to develop a facility that blends seamlessly into our existing spa.

“We are confident that the new studio will be a great asset to our already award-winning spa and health facility.”

Under the plans, the appearance of part of the existing building will be revamped to complement the expansion.

Mather & Co.’s MD, Chris Mather, commented: “Designing a fitness studio presents a whole host of challenges in terms of customer flow, accessibility and maximizing the space.

“With this new facility we have worked within an existing shell to create, what will appear to users as, a brand new, state-of-the-art gymnasium. As part of the careful planning process we have worked hard to ensure minimum disruption to guests.”

With the planning application submitted back in January, completion of the project is expected later this year.

WhiteBox Architecture’s director, Phillip Armstrong, said: “Mere, being a Grade II-listed environment is renowned as being a difficult site to attain planning approvals.

“We have worked very hard to achieve approval for a strong design that answers and expands on the original brief. We are delighted with the outcome and look forward to working with the resort through to completion.”
