Christmas comes early at food company

Christmas is coming very early at a food company as it prepares to supply some of the UK’s biggest supermarkets with an amazing 4 million packs of Yuletide food.

While most people still have summer on their minds, at SK Chilled Foods staff are fully focused on winter and Christmas in particular.

This is the busiest time of the year for the North-East based company, which is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of chilled and frozen snack foods.

Development chefs working at SK’s head office in Wynyard have been busy devising and perfecting their recipes which will be enjoyed by millions of people across the country at Christmas and the New Year.

As suppliers of food to some of the UK’s biggest supermarkets, this Christmas will see SK make 60 different products, ranging from mozzarella sticks to garlic mushrooms. In total the company will be making and supplying 4 million packs of food, which will include 6.6 million spring rolls of varying sizes and 7.5 million onion bhajis.

Development Chef Gary Olive said: “It may seem strange talking about Christmas food in the height of summer but this is a very important time for us as we create new dishes and liaise with our customers over our existing product lines.

“More of our food is eaten at Christmas and New Year than at any other time of the year, so we need to ensure we can meet the demand.

“There is lots of planning that goes into the making of the different products, hence the reason why in August when most people are thinking about food associated with summer, such as salad, BBQ food and strawberries and cream, we are thinking about Christmas party food!”
