New Aldi to create 40 jobs in Sherburn-in-Elmet
The centre of Sherburn-in-Elmet, near Selby, will be the location brand-new Aldi supermarket by the end of November.
The German retail giant is moving into a 16,500 sq ft state-of-the-art store in Low Street on land owned by property company G W Sissons & Son Ltd.
Sheffield property consultancy Commercial Property Partners (CPP) brokered the deal in which Aldi signed a 20-year lease.
The new store will create up to 40 jobs and provide a major boost to the local economy.
Ed Norris, partner with CPP, said: “This is tremendous news for Sherburn-in-Elmet. The town doesn’t have a major national supermarket and Aldi will provide a superb new retail offering.
“The land on Low Street became vacant when G W Sissons & Son Ltd moved their offices and workshops to the company’s Sherburn-in-Elmet By-Pass Park Estate, where its haulage fleet parking has been based for the past 20 years. This move freed up the Low Street land.”
Bryan Sissons, MD of G W Sissons & Son Ltd, said he was keen to ensure that their old depot was developed for the benefit of Sherburn-in-Elmet.
He commented: “This land has belonged to my family since 1650. We did not want to sell or build houses on such a strategic site within the village. We wanted to develop it ourselves to add to our current, growing, portfolio of commercial properties.
“The arrival of Aldi will certainly do this, creating new and sustainable jobs, providing a major lift to the economy of Sherburn and Selby and ensuring the village strengthens its position as a viable retail location.”
hlw Keeble Hawson’s property and construction teams acted for G W Sissons & Son Ltd when negotiating the completion of the development agreement, the build contract and the lease.
Partner Richard Smith said: “Our teams have enjoyed playing a role in this formative development and we look forward to seeing it progress to fruition over the coming months.”
The Yorkshire office of Triton Construction has built the new Aldi supermarket, which will now undergo a 12-week fit-out before opening to the public in late November.
Prior to obtaining planning permission by Selby District Council, there was an extensive public consultation where assurances were given on issues such as parking, noise, light pollution and traffic.
Mr Norris added that Sherburn’s County Councillor Bob Packham played a major role in the development of the new store and was extremely helpful in resolving highways issues that threatened to postpone the November opening.
Councilor Packham commented: “I am delighted that the Aldi store will open before Christmas and I believe it will be a real benefit for Sherburn and surrounding villages. I have received many comments from residents about the quality of the development and I am grateful that Aldi took on board the views of the Parish Council relating to the brick finish and the stone wall on the frontage.”
Tim Howe of Tim Howe Consultancy and Phillip Reynolds of Reynolds Associates CBS Limited were the appointed Quantity Surveyors and Project Managers respectively on this development.
Tim Howe said: “It is been a privilege to work on such an important project for Sherburn-in-Elmet and to ensure that it has reached a satisfactory conclusion on time and within budget.”
Phillip Reynolds added: “The transformation of this brownfield site into a 21st century supermarket will revitalise the centre of the town and strengthen its position as a key retail location in the Selby area.”
