London architects propose replacing Circle line with 'high speed travelator'

A City Road-based architectural firm has suggested replacing the London Underground’s circle line with a high-speed travelator.

NBBJ has claimed that a three-line moving walkway through the line’s 17-mile circuit could both shorten journeys and increase the line’s capacity.

The three-lane walkway, which would allow up to 55,000 people use the line at one time, would include a 3mph “feeder” lane, a yellow “middle lane” at 12mph and a “fast lane” at 15 mph.

Christian Coop, design director at City Road-based NBBJ, said the proposal was developed in response to a challenge for ideas to improve daily life in the capital from think tank New London Architecture.

Currently, it takes about an hour on average to complete a full loop of the Circle line but Mr Coop reckons this could be reduced to 56 minutes by someone walking at an average pace on the “fast lane”.
