Middlesbrough Powerchair Football Club nets £1,000

A Middlesbrough club which allows those with severe physical disabilities to enjoy sport has been gifted £1,000 by a leading developer.

Middlesbrough Powerchair Football Club received the donation from Persimmon Homes Teesside; as part of the builder’s Community Champions scheme.

Middlesbrough Powerchair Football Club is run entirely by volunteers who enable physically disabled adults and children, aged between six and 65, to take part in the game. The members meet three times a week for training sessions.

Playing across the region, the club currently has four teams of various abilities, ranging from beginners’ level to their first team who play in the national championship division.

Rosemarie Swift, a fundraiser for the club, said: “We’ve been raising funds throughout the year to find enough money to help buy a trailer to transport the powerchairs.

“Thanks to the generosity of the general public, other organisations and a lot of hard work from the fundraising team we’ve been given a great start. But we’re not there yet and this donation from Persimmon is a welcome boost.

“What it means to the club is that we can continue to give our players the confidence to enjoy this wonderful game of powerchair football.”

Joan Peart, head of sales for Persimmon Homes Teesside, said the Community Champions scheme was a way of supporting people across every city, town and village where the company works.

She said: “This is a truly inspirational club with a wonderful group of dedicated volunteers. It’s clear that those taking part get a huge sense of satisfaction and fun from being able to join in competitive sport. We are delighted to support them with a donation and help them towards their goal.”
