Company to Offer Access to the Music Industry

AN INNOVATIVE North East music company is planning to expand and create a unique venture to help socially disadvantaged people get creative.

And now Community Interest Company, Creative Base, is appealing to companies to help support the scheme, by providing materials to help it get off the ground.

Creative Base has been created by Gateshead-based Ginger Music Company, as a social enterprise to help people in the area get involved in music and arts production.

The scheme will not only provide the know-how to support anyone wanting a career in the music industry but will also help people who may be isolated, or have low self-esteem, to become involved in a range of exciting activities.

The project will be based in a currently empty unit next to Ginger Music’s offices at Stonehills, Gateshead, which the organisation wants to convert to become a performance space and café selling healthy food, as well as a video and design suite and an exhibition gallery.

Professional musician, Dee Dowling, who runs the Ginger Music Company and is heading up Creative Base, believes it will offer a unique opportunity for the people of the area.

“People in this area might well have difficulty accessing creative opportunities,” he said. “And what we are planning is an opportunity for individuals and families of all ages to get involved in the music industry.

“Once complete, the venue will be used to promote the appreciation of music, theatre and creative social networking, along with helping to boost self-esteem and encourage community engagement.”

The aim of Creative Base is to help young people with access problems and other disabilities to use the facility and the organisation plans to partner with charities that work with these groups.

The site will also work with local schools to deliver learning activities and performance events, along with providing training courses, professional advice and showcasing opportunities for emerging artists. .

Creative Base is now looking for sponsors who can provide support in kind to help the project move along quickly. This includes a kitchen, with four under-counter fridges and dishwasher, as well as tables and chairs, wood flooring, a disabled toilet pack and LED stage lighting cans.

“This new facility will be of huge benefit to the people in Gateshead,” said Dee.

“Not only will it provide a new social meeting place, it will also help people from all backgrounds to get involved with the music industry, improve their self-confidence and engage with the rest of their community.

“We’re really keen to get as many businesses as possible involved in the project so that we can benefit as many individuals as possible.”
