Rugby World Cup 2015 to generate record boost for UK economy

The UK will host a record number of international visitors than any previous Rugby World Cup according to projections from multinational professional services firm EY, ahead of the tournament beginning later this month.

With 466,000 visits expected across the duration of the tournament, international visitors are expected to contribute up to £869m in direct expenditure.

The tournament, which will be held in 13 venues across 11 UK cities, including Manchester,Leeds and Newcastle, is expected to generate an economic boost of £45m, £53m, and £93m respectively.

In addition, investment in infrastructure for the tournament is expected to reach £85m, bringing lasting benefits to host cities.

The report also revealed that this year’s Rugby World Cup will contribute up to £2.2 bn of output to the economy, translating into an additional £982m to national GDP.
