Lidl to take on Waitrose with store openings in South East

Budget retailer Lidl is planning to open dozens of new stores in the South East by opening in exclusive “villages” including Chelsea, Notting Hill and Mayfair.

The German-owned supermarket chain has unveiled plans to move into what it calls “Waitrose county” in an attempt usurp the high-end retailer from the region.

Cut-price grocer Lidl is planning an audacious assault on central London with dozens of new supermarkets in some of the capital’s most desirable neighbourhoods.

John Lewis-owned Waitrose today reported a 1.3 per cent drop in sales, amidst growing competition in the supermarket industry.

According to The Standard, Lidl is looking for 281 new locations within the M25 as part of its plans to more than double the number of UK stores.

Lidl’s UK property director Richard Taylor told the Standard: “The nature of our store concepts mean that customers will be able to carry out their full weekly shop no matter which store they visit, and have confidence that prices will remain consistent across all locations.

“We are looking forward to offering our fantastic value and quality products to more customers, as well as bringing new jobs and investment across London.”
