Building a great future in Derwentside!
Graduates of the very first construction course at Derwentside College are celebrating after achieving their certificates in basic construction skills. Even before the new construction facility at the College was completed during the summer, the demand for courses in joinery, bricklaying, plastering, painting and decorating was huge. Full time courses started this week, but these eager students were keen to get a head start, and attended a special 6 week taster course to gain their CSCS card – essential in the building industry.
Two of the students, Macauly Huscroft and Tony Hurworth, were out of work when they signed up for the course. However, they impressed their tutors so much that they were recommended to a local employer, Marvel Construction in Stanley, who has now employed them both as Apprentices.
Speaking about the course, Macauly said: “The course was fun and enjoyable. I gained the insight and knowledge I need to pursue my career in construction, and I would advise anyone to come to Derwentside College for a new start”. Tony agreed, commenting: “I’m looking forward to developing my joinery skills at Derwentside College through my apprenticeship, and eventually aim to start up my own business”.
As the construction sector enjoys a sustained period of growth right across the UK, there continues to be a demand for skilled and qualified joiners, bricklayers, plumbers, plasterers, tilers, decorators and electricians - and the College aims to help fill the gap in the Derwentside area.
Following a £500,000 investment by the College, lead lecturer Ken Johnson and his team have seen the former sports hall transformed into a state-of-the-art construction facility which now provides a stimulating learning environment for full time learners and apprentices, as well as offering short courses to part time learners.
