Pavegen collaborates with Siemens on Royal Victoria Dock project

Pavegen and Siemens have joined forces once again, as the startup installs its patented footfall technology at Royal Victoria Dock.

The startup has installed 11 tiles in the heart of the Crystal in Royal Victoria Dock, powering a LED bar that activates coloured lighting in response to visitor’s footsteps.

The footfall can also be used to track real-time data; calculating daily footfall levels as well as footsteps per tile. The installation allows Pavegen to demonstrate the potential of footfall energy in a public space; uniting communities through positive energy generation.

The project, in collaboration with global technology company Siemens, is ‘catalytic’ in setting standards for the future. The Crystal building is one of the world’s most sustainable events venues, also offering office space for Siemens’ Global Centre of Competence in Cities; emphasising their strategic focus on low-carbon, urban infrastructure solutions fit for the future.

The previous partnership with Siemens entailed installing tiles in the heart of Federation Square, Melbourne, Australia. The tiles powered lighting in the area, raising awareness to the power of a footstep in smart cities.

“With Siemens, we know we can prove that sustainability in the urban space is viable,” Pavegen CEO and Founder Laurence Kemball-Cook explained. “It’s a huge step towards Pavegen’s final goals in becoming a commercially viable energy solution.”

Situated in East London, at Royal Victoria Dock, the Crystal is the first building to achieve the highest sustainable building accolade from both BREEAM (outstanding) and LEED (platinum). Aiming to make sustainability engaging and appealing, the establishment also contains a permanent exhibition on sustainable development, where Pavegen will take centre stage.
