Peroni brewer SABMiller confirms possible takeover bid from rival AB InBev

The world’s largest beer manufacturer has expressed interest in taking over SABMiller, the FTSE 100 brewer behind brands such as Peroni and Grolsch.

SABMiller has confirmed that it was approached about a possible takeover by Budweiser brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) following months of bid discussions, according to Sky News.

Responding to media speculation in a statement, the board of London-headquartered SABMiller said: “The board of SABMiller […] confirms that Anheuser-Busch InBev has informed SABMiller that it intends to make a proposal to acquire SABMiller.

“No proposal has yet been received and the board of SABMiller has no further details about the terms of any such proposal.”

Sky News reported that an AB InBev takeover would create a brewing company with a total value of close to £180bn, based on the firms’ current share prices.

A spokesperson for AB InBev, which is headquartered in Leuven, Belgium, said: “AB InBev confirms that it has made an approach to SABMiller’s board of directors regarding a combination of the two companies.

“AB InBev’s intention is to work with SABMiller’s Board toward a recommended transaction.”

They added: “There can be no certainty that this approach will result in an offer or agreement, or as to the terms of any such agreement.”

AB InBev employs 155k people and has a portfolio of beverages spanning brands such as Leffe, Corona, Stella Artois, Hoegaarden and Beck’s. Meanwhile, SABMiller has 69k members of staff and generates close to £17bn in sales from its 200 beer brands.
