Liverpool airport team heads to South Africa to secure additional routes

Bosses at Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) are heading to South Africa this weekend in a bid to increase the number of routes available for businesses and holidaymakers in the North West.

The airport’s team will attend the 21st World Route Development Forum in Durban along with Chris Brown, director of destination marketing organisation Marketing Liverpool, with the aim of increasing business for the airport and the Liverpool City Region.

The annual event brings together representatives of 250 airlines and 650 airports from around the world. The LJLA team has confirmed it has 20 meetings in the pipeline with European airlines and others from further afield.

LJLA’s director of air service development, Mark Povall, said: “This is always an important event for us, but what’s interesting is that many airlines are just as interested to talk to us as we are to talk to them and a real sign of the progress we have been making here in recent months.

“It’s also an excellent way to let airlines know about all of the exciting opportunities and developments taking place in the Liverpool City Region.”

In the last year, LJLA has secured the services of five new airlines and offers passengers from the Liverpool City Region access to seven additional international destinations.

Marketing Liverpool’s Chris Brown commented: “As the city’s visitor and investment offer continues to grow it is important that we convey this message in conjunction with LJLA to airlines who are seeking to develop new routes.

“Following a successful European Routes event in Aberdeen, the opportunity to take our message to World Routes provides another excellent platform and opportunity for us.”
