GM event inspires next generation of accountancy professionals

Young people from across the Greater Manchester region have attended a careers event at Manchester Business School aimed at highlighting the routes into accountancy as a career.

The event, jointly hosted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and Manchester Business School last week, was designed to educate young people on graduate and non-graduate entry to the profession.

Keynote speaker Susan Jee, who has held a number of senior Financial Director posts, including Group Finance Director at multi-billion pound nuclear fuels company BNFL plc, advised and inspired young attendees at the event to enter the world of accountancy.

Speaking after the event, she said: “Accountancy is a fulfilling career with vast potential. My career is testament to what can be achieved in the profession.

“I am thrilled that so many young people attended the event and I hope that they took away the sense that accountancy is an expanding sector with excellent prospects.”

Year 12 pupils from Salford City College, Canon Slade in Bolton, Aquinas College in Stockport, Bolton Sixth Form College, Stockport Grammar and St Helens College attended the event in the city.

The ICAEW’s Steph Campbell said: “Greater Manchester is the driving force behind the Northern Powerhouse and needs talented accountants to manage the region’s economic growth. This event demonstrated that accountancy is a great career choice for our talented young people.”

Penny Clarke at Manchester Business School, added: “This important event highlighted the variety of routes students can take into the accountancy profession. The Manchester Business School is a respected seat of learning for tomorrow’s accountants and I hope we have inspired the next generation to embark on a career in the sector.”
