Northumbrian Water launches £3.2m region-wide scheme

Northumbrian Water is launching a scheme to improve drinking water quality across five North East sites.

The £3.2m project will see new equipment installed at Northumberland, Tyneside, Wearside, Darlington and Teesside, an initiative set to benefit over over one million customers in the region.

Equipment will be used to balance the pH and mineral content of the water to reduce potential corrosion of lead and iron pipes, which can cause discolouration and traces in supplies.

The scheme will improve water quality and also reduce the frequency of pipe replacement, further minimising future inconvenience to customers and road users.

It has been approved by the Drinking Water Inspectorate, the independent regulator of water quality and safety.

Customers should not notice any change to their water supplies as a result of the work which will be completely confined to the treatment works sites.

The work, will be carried out simultaneously, starting in October, at water treatment works at Broken Scar, Darlington; Mosswood, County Durham; Warkworth, Northumberland and Wear Valley, Weardale to be completed early in 2016.

Project Manager Glyn Jenkins said: “This further improvement to customer service will happen behind the scenes at our treatment works unbeknown to customers and will help to ensure that we continue to supply them with clean, clear drinking water that tastes good.”
