Vodafone ceases merger talks with Liberty Global

Vodafone has terminated talks with Liberty Global, the US cable provider, over a much-anticipated merger

The telecoms giant has been in conversation with the US company for several months after Liberty Global’s chairman, John Malone, said Vodafone’s European mobile networks would be “a great fit” with his company’s own.

However, Vodafone has always insisted the two companies were considering “a possible exchange of selected assets” rather than a mega-merger, worth an estimated £100bn.

However in a short statement issued this morning, Vodafone said talks had ended.

It said: “On 5 June 2015, Vodafone Group confirmed that it was in the early stages of discussions with Liberty Global regarding a possible exchange of selected assets between the two companies,

“Vodafone today announces that discussions with Liberty Global have terminated.”
