Margam plant contract awarded to Shepherd Engineering Services

National building services provider, Shepherd Engineering Services, has been appointed to provide mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) services on the Margam Green Energy Plant at Port Talbot, which is being constructed by a consortium between Interserve Construction and the Danish supplier Babcock & Wilcox Vølund.

This major project is for the design, installation, commissioning and handover of MEP services on the 40MW biomass power plant project, a scheme which represents a major boost for the Welsh economy as well as the UK’s commitment to meeting its renewable energy targets. Margam Green Energy Plant is owned by Glennmont Partners, a specialist clean energy investment fund.

Construction of the £160m plant started in February 2015 and, once completed, it will be capable of processing 250,000 tonnes of waste wood per annum, including contaminated wood, with no pre-treatment. Shepherd Engineering Services is due to start work on the site in May 2016 and conclude in early 2017, ahead of the plant’s expected completion by the second quarter of 2017.

Margam Green Energy Plant is the latest addition to Shepherd Engineering Services’ major green infrastructure project portfolio, which includes the ground-breaking biomass conversion of Drax Power Station in Selby, as well as MEP contracts on Queensferry Crossing, a key element of Scotland’s largest infrastructure investment in a generation, the Polmadie Recycling and Renewable Energy Centre in Glasgow (also with Interserve Construction) and the Greater Manchester Waste Project.
