Public invited to hear The Sill’s next steps

Residents are being invited to attend an open meeting on Tuesday October 6th to find out about upcoming plans for The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre.

As the £14.8m project moves into construction phase, lead partner Northumberland National Park Authority (NNPA) are hosting an information-giving public meeting at the Twice Brewed Inn, Military Road, on Tuesday evening to offer an insight into project plans.

The event will also allow local residents and interested parties to ask questions about all aspects of the exciting development at the site at Once Brewed.

Hot drinks and refreshments will be served from 6pm before presentations from key individuals and organisations involved in The Sill get underway. Topics discussed will include highways progress and next steps from Northumberland County Council, updates on the building phase from construction team Sir Robert McAlpine, details of the developing activities programme as well as general project updates from NNPA and YHA.

NNPA Chairman Glen Sanderson, who will lead the meeting, said: “This is a really exciting time for The Sill as demolition work begins and we move one step closer to the development becoming a reality. It’s vitally important to ensure local residents are kept updated as things progress and for us to provide opportunities for the community to have their say and get involved in different aspects of The Sill.

“The activity programme is developing at pace and we’re keen to engage with residents, community groups and businesses to explore potential for how we could work together to deliver these. The meeting will also provide the chance for Northumberland County Council to share updates on road safety aspects of the development, which we know has been an important issue for many local people.

“We hope lots of residents will be able to join us at the meeting to learn more about future plans, to ask any questions and to see how they can get involved in the project.”

Once Brewed, on the Military Road, is now closed for demolition of the National Park Visitors’ Centre and Youth Hostel to make way for the flagship Sill development, with building works expected to last for the next 18 months.

During this time, visitors will be able to benefit from temporary National Park Centre facilities, including hot drinks and snacks, at Walltown Quarry near Greenhead, and the Twice Brewed Inn. In the near future visitors to Twice Brewed will be able to access National Park tourist information, along with local crafts and produce previously sold at Once Brewed. During the construction period, people can also look forward to trial activities and events hosted at nearby Walltown Quarry – which will also act as a stop-gap and advisory point for people passing through.

The public meeting will take place at Twice Brewed Inn, Military Road, from 6pm to 8pm.
