Newcastle’s Metnor completes Shieldfield student accommodation project

Rosedale Court, a 338 bed student accommodation site based in Shieldfield, has reached completion in time for the 2015/16 academic year.

Newcastle-based Metnor Construction completed the project, the firm’s third in the Shieldfield area, and shows the company’s ability to deliver high quality, large scale projects both on time and within budget, according to managing director Chris Cant.

Mr. Cant said: “Student accommodation projects have critical deadlines as they must be ready for the start of an academic year, otherwise the owner is unable to let them out to students and risks sitting with an empty building for a year if the deadline is missed. We completed our first project, the 396 bed Winn Studios, for Northumbria University in 2011 after a 21 month construction period.”

“Since then we have built Turner Court, a 274 bed building which successfully opened in 2013, and now the 338 bed Rosedale Court – both projects being built for our sister company Metnor Property Group. We are also about to start work on a £19m student scheme for a client in Kingston upon Thames which is scheduled to open in 2017.”

Mr Cant added that student accommodation is not the only type of construction work undertaken by the company, having recently completed a number of successful projects including the newly developed Hampton by Hilton hotel in Newcastle City centre, the walled garden visitor centre at Wynyard Hall and a number of care homes around the UK.

He said: “We currently have a strong order book, a dedicated workforce and are actively looking to expand our presence in our native North East. We have seen a steady increase in turnover over the last two years and we have taken on 13 new staff since the start of the year at all levels including a number of apprentices.”

The Rosedale Court project was a joint effort across the Metnor Group with Norstead, the group’s mechanical and electrical contracting arm working alongside Metnor Construction to complete the mechanical and electrical fit out of the building.
