Canadian firm submits plans for third East Yorkshire drilling site

A public consultation has begun regarding plans by a Canadian firm to operate an exploratory borehole at a third site in East Yorkshire.

Rathlin Energy has submitted an application to the Environment Agency to test drill for natural gas at a West Newton site, which is now called B.

The Environment Agency has also confirmed that the permit is not for fracking and any plans, which are granted,will not allow fracking under any circumstances.

Drilling and testing sites were set up by Rathlin Energy at West Newton and Crawberry Hill, Walkington, in 2013.

The council approved plans for the third drill site back in June, but this decision wasn’t received well by the local community, who have concerns about what impact these drilling sites will have on the surrounding environment.

A spokesperson for the agency has said that they want to find out the views from people in the region “before we decide whether to issue permits”.

“As a regulator of onshore oil and gas exploration and development in England, the Environment Agency’s role is to ensure that such activities are carried out in a way that does not harm people or the environment.”

The public consultation will end on October 30th.
