GEFCO to boost activity at Port of Ramsgate
Following the granting of a licence to transport and logistics company, GEFCO UK LTd, activity at the Port of Ramsgate is set for a boost.
GEFCO currently imports and distributes 500,000 vehicles annually through UK ports for several major vehicle manufacturers.
Following on from the completion of maintenance dredging, car transporter ships are expected to shortly commence importation to Ramsgate. These ships will utilise the Port’s existing Ro-Ro (roll on roll off) berths.
Under the licence GEFCO will implement a new port operation including storage systems and physical security to store the cars temporarily at the Port prior to distribution around the UK.
Ramsgate Harbour has a history of car importation going right back to the 1960s which was continued when the port was constructed in the early 1980s.
This new operation will utilise the Port’s existing infrastructure and a portion of the freight and car lanes, all of which are ready to accommodate this new business, without compromising additional new ferry opportunities. GEFCO are pleased to be working with the port of Ramsgate to add more flexibility in import solutions available to its customers.
