Manchester Airport reports record September
Manchester Airport continues to report record passenger figures, as bosses announced that last month was the busiest September on record thanks to childless couples and an influx of students from overseas.
The 30-day period saw the airport serve 2,430,142 flyers, which pushed its year-on-year total up by 5.44% and drove its rolling annual total close to 23m.
Manchester Airport has put the figures down to the increased availability of flights and additional routes, and those classed as DINKYs (double income no kids yet) choosing to jet off now that the school holidays have ended.
Furthermore, scheduled international passengers at manchester airport increased by 7.55% in September against the same point in 2014, with an estimated 11.5k students touching down to study in Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan, Salford or Bolton universities.
Overall, around 23.8k international students are believed to have landed in Manchester Airport to study at universities across Merseyside, the Midlands, Yorkshire and Scotland.
The airport’s managing director, Ken O’Toole, said of the results: “September is always a busy month, because despite it being the end of school summer holidays, certain people take that opportunity to go away, whilst many others arrive to study.
“The international connectivity that Manchester Airport affords to universities beyond those just in Greater Manchester, such as in Liverpool, Yorkshire, Birmingham, Newcastle and even Scotland, should not be underestimated as it helps to make the North of England a truly competitive proposition that is both attractive and accessible globally.”
Each day in September saw an average of around 81k people flying via Manchester Airport, which is more than the capacity of the Emirates Old Trafford Cricket Ground and Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium combined.
Elsewhere, the rolling annual total of cargo carried at the airport reached 101,167, an increase of 6%.
