Multi-million pound Hull city centre transformation underway

A multi-million pound regeneration project of Hull city centre has officially commenced.

This first phase of the public realm programme is to prepare Hull to stage the UK City of Culture celebrations in 2017.

The project includes the completion of a new public art installations, high quality paving, lighting and street furniture that will create contemporary spaces, whilst showcasing Hull’s history and architecture.

The first phases of the transformation are scheduled to be finished before 2017.

Preliminary work from contractor Eurovia Contracting has begun on Whitefriargate, Jameson St, Waltham Street, Queen Victoria Square and The Fruit Market.

Tomorrow, excavators will start to remove existing flags and block paving in the areas, in order to lay new paving throughout the city centre, as well as new street furniture and planting.

Next week, work will then begin in Trinity Square, complementing the planned refurbishment to Holy Trinity Church.

Eurovia employed Public Liaison Officers who have started work in the city centre making contact with residents and businesses that will be directly affected by the work.

Councillor Martin Mancey, portfolio holder with responsibility for public infrastructure, said: “We have a huge amount of work to do to get the city ready for 2017 and I would ask businesses and residents for their patience whilst the work is under way.

“The employment of the Public Liaison Officers is invaluable and will provide great assistance in communicating with our city centre businesses and residents. We will of course do everything possible to minimise disruption”.

Garry Taylor, City Major Projects Manager for Hull City Council, added: “The start of the work signals the start of Hull’s move into the 21st century, whilst respecting our wonderfully strong heritage.

“It is essential that we are ready, not just for our year in the spotlight in 2017 but beyond this; creating a legacy that has tangible benefits to the city and its residents.”

The final programme of will be updated throughout the project and is scheduled for completion November 2016.
