The new wing of the ic1 on Mount Pleasant is now 70% full

Two new companies announced for Liverpool Science Park

Liverpool Science Park (LSP) has added to the city region’s £1.7bn life sciences sector after welcoming two new companies.

Lab space at the site’s recently constructed £8m wing, in the Innovation Centre 1 (ic1) building, has been secured by gold nanoparticle startup Nano Biosols and lab equipment supplier Gemini Biosciences.

The new additions to the science park, which includes geospatial firm Mobile GIS Services, mean the new wing of the ic1, located on Mount Pleasant, is now 70% full with eight of the eleven labs occupied.

LSP chief executive Chris Musson said: “The extension to the ic1 building was built speculatively in response to the growing demand for lab space in the city from a variety of technologies – basically any business needing to operate out of a clean, sterile environment.

“We’re therefore delighted to see such as positive take up for the lab space and to see such a unique mix of businesses enjoying the facilities.”

He added: “These two new businesses are young, bright and incredibly knowledgeable in their fields of life sciences research and so it’s a pleasure to welcome them to the diverse mix of tenants here at the park.”

Adrian Walsh is the founder of Nano Biosols, which was established with a £100k investment package gained via The North West Fund for Biomedical.

Commenting on the firm’s new LSP base, Adrian said: “Nanomedicine is a growing sector and I’m really pleased with how successful the transition from an academic setting to a business environment has gone so far.

“Liverpool Science Park made this transition easy because we still feel we have the excellent research links and access to academics as well as being part of a thriving business community and the wider knowledge economy.”

Gemini Biosciences, meanwhile, launched earlier this month. The company’s founder and MD, Dr Paul Ajuh, chose LSP for his company due to the proximity of Liverpool and Manchester universities and the opportunities for biotech firms in the city region.

He said: “I’ve always loved Liverpool since my days as a student in the city and with the opportunity to work with the research teams at the University of Liverpool, it seemed like a natural fit to launch Gemini Biosciences here.

“The lab facilities and support available to young high technology companies at Liverpool Science Park are excellent and it is in such a great location, being so close to the two universities, research centres and other exciting projects in the city.”
