Carlsberg finds buyer for Leeds’ former Tetley’s brewery site
Carlsberg has sold the ex-Tetley’s Brewery site in Leeds for an undisclosed sum.
Vastint, the property division of the Inter IKEA Group, has bought the historic 22-acre site in the city’s South Bank from the brewing company.
Carlsberg’s decision to close down the brewery in 2011, which has been operational since 1822, resulted in the loss of 170 jobs.
In recent years, the premises was used for multiple purposes, including the conversion of the headquarters into the art gallery The Tetley.
Andrew Cobden, managing director of Vastint UK Services Ltd, said: “It is really special to have the chance to contribute to the regeneration of the South Bank area, having the potential to bring considerable benefits to the city.
“We’re looking forward to engaging with all key stakeholders to bring forward a scheme that is in step with the council vision.”
Vastint has also claimed that the redevelopment of the site will stay within the aims of Leeds City Council’s plans for the area, while creating a “vibrant, well connected and sustainable residential and business community.”
As part of the deal Carlsberg will still own The Tetley, and have a presence at the Tetley’s House office building.
