Thousands more Cheshire businesses and homes given superfast broadband access
In the latest round of Connecting Cheshire’s drive to give high-speed broadband to companies and households across the county, an additional 10k properties will soon be connected.
The laying of new cables to boost network coverage, in areas such as Halton and Warrington, has already started and will see over £6m invested in the next two years, offering broadband access to areas not reached in previously roll-outs.
As the network is extended, rural areas such as Burleydam, Wincle, Arley, Huxley and Gawsworth will be able to use superfast broadband for the first time.
Furthermore, outlying areas like Cholmondeley, Malpas, Mobberley and Bunbury are also set to benefit from phase two of the scheme.
Cheshire East Council’s deputy leader, Cllr David Brown, said: “This is fantastic news for residents as we will be able to reach more premises with fibre, particularly those rural areas where some of the lowest speeds remain.
“We are determined to ensure that faster broadband is available to as many premises as possible so that the social and economic benefits can be realised – not only for our businesses but for people of all ages.”
Funding for phase two was provided by government and telecomms giant BT, as well as the the councils of Cheshire East, Cheshire West, Halton, Warrington and Chester
BT’s North West regional director, Mike Blackburn, commented: “BT has provided a further £1.8m to boost the reach of the new roll-out of this truly transformational technology.
“And, in addition, the Openreach engineers have done a superb job, in such a short space of time, to ensure that so many more homes and businesses in Cheshire can benefit from a more connected society.”
