Urban&Civic to transform central Manchester site with new hotel and apartments

Plans to transform a site in Manchester with new residential buildings and a hotel have been submitted to the city council.

The scheme, put forward by property development and investment firm Urban&Civic, comprises two residential buildings offering 238 apartments, a 148-bedroom hotel, ground-level commercial space and a public square.

Urban&Civic bought the one-acre site, located on the corner of Whitworth Street and Princess Street, in December 2014.

Urban&Civic’s development manager, Andrew Lavin, said: “This is an exciting new mixed-used development that will transform a key city centre site that has stood derelict for over a decade.

“Our vision is to create a vibrant development that sensitively reconnects the site to the surrounding area. We believe the introduction of local independent traders in the ground floor units will help integrate the scheme into the neighbourhood.

He added: “We plan to retain ownership and long-term stewardship to help ensure the development fulfils its potential.”

If consent is granted, work is due to start on the opening phase of the residential buildings next summer, with the first occupants moving in at some point in early 2018.
