Halloween becomes second most popular and lucrative night out of the year

Halloween has become the second biggest and most attended night out of the year, catching up with New Year’s Eve in the popularity stakes, according to new stats by the UK’s leading event guide and ticket agent.

Ticket sales at Skiddle have revealed that an increasing amount of people are getting into the Halloween party spirit, making it the second biggest event in the clubbing calendar.

In 2014 there was a 36% increase in the amount of ticket sales sold for Halloween themed nights compared to the previous year, and based on current sales this year it is expected to increase even further.

The research found that although New Year’s Eve still leads as the most popular night out of the year, Halloween now follows closely in second place as the number of Halloween events taking place soars. This year the number of Halloween events taking place has increased by 29% compared to last.

The research also found that party revellers are willing to splash the cash on ghoulish parties. A survey of Skiddle customers found that Brits spend an average £100 attending a Halloween-themed night out, including tickets, drinks and costumes.

Richard Dyer, director of Skiddle, said: “Over the past few years we have seen the number of ticket sales for Halloween themed nights increase significantly. So much so that Halloween is now the second most popular night-out after New Year’s Eve.

“We believe that one of the reasons Halloween has become so popular is because of the number of unique venues popping up all over the UK. Whilst the commercial party nights are still very popular, club organisers are now thinking outside the box and hosting nights in innovative venues such as asylums, abandoned tunnels and old warehouses.

“The dressing-up culture that has become such an integral part of summer festivals has also had an impact on the popularity of Halloween themed nights. It’s often gone a lot further than simply fake blood and ghosts masks, with that creativity in outfit planning ramping up the special occasion feel of Halloween.”

As Halloween approaches, Skiddle has also revealed some of the spookiest nights taking place across the UK:

London: Club revellers can head to see the infamous and appropriately named Knife Party who will headline the 02 Academy in Brixton on 31 October. Knife Party is made up of two of the members of drum and bass band Pendulum and their shows combine a unique combination of EDM and hard-hitting dubstep.

Edinburgh: Party-goers looking for hair-raising night can see world-renowned DJ Dimitri from Paris play at the ‘Haunted House of Disco’ on 31 October. The venue is top secret and will be announced just 24 hours before the event takes place. Dimitri from Paris is known for his remixes from the likes of Bjork and New Order and his recognisable disco-beats.

Liverpool: How about partying in a former mental hospital? A collaboration between Liverpool promoters Freeze and Cream will provide the opportunity to do just that at daytime party Asylum, where German techno tyrant Sven Vath will bring his Cocoon empire to the city with an afterparty at globally famous superclub Nation.

Lancaster: Those that can hold their nerve can head to A Wing, a former prison for a Halloween event with world famous drum and bass label Hospitality. Taking place on 30 October, Camo & Krooked will headline the night and will be joined by the likes of S.P.Y and Krakota.
