A Taste of Samoa, South Africa and Scotland

A leading North East catering company has delivered a unique taste of Samoa, South Africa and Scotland after scoring a new client.

1879 Events Management, a subsidiary of Sunderland AFC, cooked up a unique selection of dishes from all three countries after landing a new deal with award-winning jeweller, ROX Diamonds and Thrills.

The contract, secured after representatives from ROX attended a special showcase event at the Stadium of Light, included creating, cooking and serving the special themed menus at two special afternoon receptions.

The first, coinciding with the Scotland versus South Africa rugby game at Newcastle’s St James’ Park, included South African dishes of Braaied Boerewors - a traditional, barbecue (braai) sausage dish served with shredded cabbage and potato – and Bunny Chow – a meat stew served in a hallowed loaf of bread.

The second, taking place ahead of the Scotland against Samoa game, included Palusami Lu’au - meat and onions, marinated in coconut milk and baked in taro leaves – and Kale Moa – a Samoan mild chicken curry.

Guests at both events, held in the Thrill Room champagne bar and lounge at ROX Jewellery’s boutique store in Newcastle’s Monument Mall, were also able to enjoy traditional Scottish dishes of haggis, neeps and tatties, chunky beef in ale and Cranachan with whipped cream, whisky, honey and raspberries.

Jane McCullough, Deputy Manager of ROX, Monument Mall, said: “Our receptions were held in partnership with Red Sky Management as a thank you for ROX’s VIP customers and Red Sky’s corporate contacts, who also attended the rugby games at St James’ Park.

“We wanted to offer them a unique, dining experience tailored to the event and, after seeing what 1879 Events Management could do at their Stadium of Light showcase, we had no doubt they were the perfect choice.”

1879 Events Management, which launched in 2012, currently manages catering and events at the Stadium of Light and National Glass Centre, Sunderland, as well as its own Beach House bistro and all manner of external corporate and private gatherings.

Earlier this year it held Countdown to Kick Off, a special showcase at the Stadium of Light, offering existing and potential customers the chance to sample its services and meet members of the SAFC first team.

The contract with ROX Jewellery is among several success stories from the event, which the company hopes to replicate in the future.

Gary Hutchinson, Commercial Director for SAFC and 1879 Events Management, said: “The Countdown to Kick Off event was a great success, allowing us to cement our ongoing business relationships and to create new ones with brands like ROX Jewellery.

“This is a great partnership for us and one which has already allowed the team at 1879 Events Management to flex their creative culinary muscles and come up with two amazing menus representing Scotland, South Africa and Samoa.”
