Nine Yorkshire restaurants named among the best in the UK
Nine Yorkshire restaurants have been named in a list of the Top Restaurants in the UK, published by the Sunday Times.
The leading Yorkshire restaurant is The Yorke Arms in Ramsgill, near Pateley Bridge, which came 21st. The Sunday Times commented: “Next year Frances Atkins will celebrate her 20th anniversary as chef and proprietor with a continuing focus on fine dining with healthy ingredients. Grouse and partridge are favourites.”
The Black Swan at Oldstead, near Easingwold, is 28th, followed by The Box Tree in Ilkley; the Pipe and Glass near Beverley; Laterna in Scarborough; the Orchid in Harrogate; Le Langhe in York; Eric’s in Huddersfield; and Melton’s in York.
The Black Swan at Oldstead is praised for growing almost all of its fruit, herbs and vegetables in its five-acre vegetable garden. The Black Swan’s chef, Tommy Banks, is just 26, the youngest chef in the Top 100.
Meanwhile the Box Tree in Ilkley, one of the most famous of all Yorkshire restaurants, “still passes the taste test” according to the Sunday Times. Founded in 1962, the Box Tree’s rich heritage is “honoured by chef Simon Gueller”, who took over the restaurant with his wife Rena 10 years ago.
There is also a mention for Winteringham Fields, on the southern banks of the Humber, where chef-proprietor Colin McGurran is praised for his “smart and adventurous cuisine”.
Sir Gary Verity, the Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire said, “This is terrific news. To see so many of Yorkshire’s restaurants being hailed among the best in the UK is fantastic and maintains the county’s reputation for culinary excellence.”
