Survey reveals multi-million pound economic benefit of Tour de Yorkshire
Spectators at the inaugural Tour de Yorkshire cycling race held earlier this year spent close to £50m, according to new data.
Research commissioned by the event’s organiser, Welcome to Yorkshire, shed light on the multi-million pound economic benefit of the three-day competition, which was seen by over 1.2m people.
Around one in five of the spectators came from outside Yorkshire, the BBC has reported, with those attending more than one day of the event boosting the figures. The average stay for non-Yorkshire residents was two and a half nights.
Total spends encompassed the cost of accommodation and cash going towards transport, food, drink, and event souvenirs.
The survey, carried out by research agency GRASP, quizzed 1,500 people about their spending.
Now, Welcome to Yorkshire is due to hold the next men’s race from April 29 next year and a women’s event starting April 30.
