Ikea considers Oxford Street for first central London store

Ikea has said it is considering opening on the UK’s busiest shopping street in a move that will see the Swedish retailer launch its first central London store.

The Swedish retailer in currently in talks with BHS department store on London’s Oxford Street to open an ‘order-and-collection’ point.

An Ikea spokesman said that the company is exploring a number of other potential locations: “While we are seriously considering this opportunity, we have nothing to confirm at this point in time while discussions are ongoing,”

The flat-pack retailer, which currently has 18 stores in the UK, boats four full-size outlets around Greater London - at Wembley, Edmonton, Croydon and Lakeside near Thurrock in Essex. However, Ikea still lacks a central London presence.

Gillian Drakefor, UK country manager said: “Our customers are also telling us that with 18 stores in the UK, we are often too far away. Order and Collection Points give us the opportunity to trial new ways of being more accessible,”
