Revealed: Crossrail’s lighter, faster and more energy efficient trains

Transport for London has revealed the design of its news Crossrail trains, which will begin operating in 2017 as the major infrastructure project reaches completion.

The trains, which are being built by Bombardier in Derby, will have full WiFi access and will be lighter than existing trains, while using 30 per cent less electricity.

The £1bn fleet will have less seating than current trains, with the number of seats per carriage reduced from around 75 to 50.

Howard Smith, operations director of Crossrail at Transport for London, said: “When they are fully operational in 2019, the new trains will carry an estimated 200 million commuters a year.

“The trains will have walk-through carriages, each with three wide doorways to enable people to get on and off quickly at central stations, air-conditioning, are fully accessible and use the latest technology to provide customers with real-time travel information to help them plan their onward journey.”
