'Boris Bikes' to ride into Brighton

Brighton is set to welcome a cycle hire scheme similar to that of ‘Boris bikes’ in London after the scheme received formal approval from councillors this week.

More than 430 bikes will be available for hire from 50 hubs along the seafront, in the city centre and along the A27 to the Falmer university campuses.

Councillor Gill Mitchell, lead member for environment and sustainability at Brighton & Hove City Council, said: “This is an exciting scheme that should work well for the city. The aim is to provide a flexible service, working alongside existing cycle hire providers and which gives more choice to those who live, work or visit here.”

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson launched the cycle hire scheme in the capital back in 2010.

At a meeting on Tuesday, Brighton and Hove environment and transport committee the formal nod of approval to seek a provider for the scheme. The council said it is keen for the scheme to be launched by May 2017.
