Chelsea kicks off Stamford Bridge rebuild with 60,000-seat stadium plan

Chelsea FC have submitted a planning application for a 60,000-seat stadium on the site of their West London home, which currently has a capacity of 41,600.

The development work, which has an estimated cost of £500m, would be financed by Roman Abramovich, who bought the club in 2003.

Along with Tottenham, the West London club have been in talks to temporarily occupy Wembley while construction takes place.

A club statement said: “The planning process will last beyond the end of the season; if the application is granted planning permission there will still be a lot of work to do before redevelopment can start, including obtaining various other consents. We will inform you of progress through this process.”

Earlier this week, Chelsea reported a loss of £23.1m for the financial year ending 30 June 2015, despite a record profit last year of £18.4m. The club, which won the Premier League last season, saw revenue remain steady at £314.3m, a slight drop from the previous year’s record turnover of £319.8m.
