Muay Thai enthusiasts launch new combat sports management business
A new combat sports management company launched in Greater Manchester this week.
Tanko Management, the brainchild of MD Jamie Alaise and Muay Thai fighter Panicos Yusuf, will aim to develop the careers of British fighters, support combat sports events and work to maintain the growth of martial arts sports in the UK.
Panicos, who manages and owns Stockport’s AllPowers Gym, where Tanko Management athletes will be developed, said of the venture: “We’re delighted to announce the launch of Tanko Management, a project we’re excited to get off the ground.
“This is a crucial time in the development of combat sports in the UK and Muay Thai in particular. Data from Sport England shows that participation in combat sports has rocketed by 23% in the UK since 2006, whilst other sports are in decline.”
He continued: “Our own study of activity in gyms across the UK shows participation in Muay Thai is up 182% over the last year.
“At the same time, major fighting Muay Thai events are seeing sell-out crowds of passionate fans.”
Tanko Management now represents mixed martial arts athlete Brendan Loughnane, from South Manchester, who appeared on US reality TV show The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes. Further, the company will also represent Dakota Ditcheva, the daughter of former World Kickboxing Association champion Lisa Howarth. Muay Thai fighter Dakota gained gold medals in the last three World Championships.
Speaking further about increasing awareness and participation in combat sports in the UK, Panicos commented: “There is a risk that sports such as Muay Thai will lose their identity if they are not managed by people who have been raised to understand the values that support the spectacle in the ring.
“Muay Thai in particular, is not only highly skilled, requiring dedication and commitment, but also teaches spirituality, tradition and respect.”
He added: “This is one of the reasons we’re so thrilled with our first signings. Both Dakota and Brendan are talented, passionate, respectful athletes and are perfect ambassadors for combat sports here in the UK.”
