Beacon selected to deliver service across the community

The region’s leading sight loss charity has been selected to deliver personalised care services to people in the West Midlands.

Beacon was awarded the contract by Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council, recognising the high quality services provided by the charity at its Sedgley headquarters and in the community.

The Care at Home service delivers flexible, personalised support to people assessed as having critical or substantial requirements for personal care to enable them to remain and have an enhanced quality of life in their own home.

Katie Jobling, head of charity operations for Beacon, said: “Beacon is one of a number of providers selected to deliver the Care at Home service in the community, helping people to live more independently across the region.

“For 140 years, we have been dedicated to helping local people with sight loss lead fuller and more independent lives by providing the finest facilities and support.

“Across the West Midlands there are currently some 167,000 people living with sight loss – a number expected to rise to more than 200,000 by 2020.

“With this in mind, Beacon offers a full range of facilities and support to visually impaired people across the West Midlands, including a mix of residential, day care and community services.

“Through the Care at Home service, Beacon will ensure those people across the north Dudley MBC area who require specialised support will receive the same high quality service as those who visit the centre.”

Beacon operates an Independent Living Centre, which offers a holistic, person-centric assessment to support the individual through their sight loss journey. Practical measures include tailored fitness programmes, arts and crafts activities, life skills courses and IT training.

The charity’s ActivEyes programme provides inclusive and varied leisure and social activities for fitness and confidence.

As part of its commitment to promoting the importance of looking after your eyes, and developing enterprises that generate funds for the core charity, Beacon has recently opened an opticians at its Sedgley site. Beacon Opticians+ is open to all and carries a range of frames and styles to suit all tastes and are competitively priced. To arrange an appointment please call 01902 886794.
