Volunteers to keep warm with cash donation

Volunteers at the Heugh Battery Museum will be kept warm this winter thanks to a £1,000 cash donation from Persimmon Homes Teesside. Located on the Headland in Hartlepool, the museum provides the upkeep of the only WWI battlefield in the UK and commemorates the day war came to Hartlepool in the Bombardment of 1914.

The cash injection is made from Persimmon’s Community Champions scheme, which is a pot of £24,000 to help fund and support local clubs, groups and good causes. With the funding, the museum will provide its team of volunteers with safety equipment, warm fleece jackets, overalls and smart polo shirts.

Diane Stephens, manager from the Heugh Battery Museum, said: “During the winter it gets very cold on site. This clothing will help our volunteers, many of whom are unemployed or retired, keep warm on site. It will also enable them to carry out their volunteering activities safely and comfortably.”

Joan Peart, head of sales for Persimmon Homes Teesside, said the Community Champions scheme was a way of supporting people across every city, town and village where the company builds new homes.

She said: “We are delighted to support the Heugh Battery Museum as we know the site is of such historical importance to the area. Being in a coastal location we could clearly see how the warm clothing would be of benefit to the volunteers.”

The Persimmon Community Champions scheme is a national programme where clubs, groups and good causes can apply for funding up to the value of £1,000 to match money they have already raised themselves.

Nationwide the company will donate a total of £750,000. Joan continued: “It couldn’t be any easier to apply for funding and we are now calling for people to apply for next month’s allocation by completing a form at www.persimmonhomes.com/charity.”
