London bus stops enter digital age with 'e-paper' schedules

Transport for London (TfL) has unveiled ‘e-paper’ signs on a bus stops in the city, giving passengers an up-to-date schedule of the bus timetable.

The initiative, which is currently in trial phase, offers timetables, route maps and real-time travel information.

The screens are the same size as a conventional bus stop sign and are interactive for passengers wanting to browse various schedules.

Like a Kindle, the timetables use minimal electricity and are readable in bright sunlight. TfL said the screen can be charged via solar panel and retrieve bus arrival information over 3G.

The system is currently available at one bus station near Waterloo Bridge, although the plan is to introduce a further three in Parliament Square, Piccadilly Circus and Sloane Square next month.
