Local housebuilder brings £26 million investment to local area

Leading Bristol housebuilder Barratt Homes has built 640 properties in the region during the past year and brought more than £26m to communities where it is building new homes.

The figures, which form part of the company’s socio-economic footprint, reveal the effect this new housing has had on the local economy.

While the company itself has made more than £16million of contributions to councils and for infrastructure and affordable housing for local people, it also calculates that the local economy has benefited from £9.4million of additional spending in shops and services from the residents of new homes they have built. This spending alone supports more than 100 retail and service-related jobs.

Barratt Bristol managing director Russell Glimstead said, “While people are aware of the thousands of jobs we create and support directly in the areas we build new homes, this research highlights the investment we also bring to local communities and the economy.

We are committed to a strategy that includes leaving a positive and lasting legacy in the communities in which we build homes, be that through job creation or enhancing and protecting the local environment. We are proud to be a major force in the growth and prosperity of our region and look forward to continuing our work in 2016.“

Included within the company’s socio-economic footprint are key figures relating to the company’s support for the housebuilding supply chain, local communities, environment, public services and employment. Figures include:

► Supported 1,400 jobs directly and through its contractors and suppliers

► Directly employed eight new graduates, trainees and apprentices

► 90% of components used in the construction process were manufactured in the UK.

► Donated £10,943 to charitable causes

► Planted or retained 7,700 trees or shrubs on its developments

► 1.1 hectares of wildlife habitat were created as part of its ongoing commitment to preserving local eco-systems

► Generated £10.9M in tax to support public services

The report on Barratt’s Socio-Economic Footprint in 2015 was carried out by planning consultant, Nathaniel Lichfield & Partners (NLP).
