Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons comes to Leeds

The annual scientific meeting of the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (AUGIS) has chosen Leeds to hold its 19th annual conference next year, following support from ConferenceLeeds during the bidding process. The conference, which will take place at the Royal Armouries in September (2016), will attract around 400 national delegates – along with additional exhibitors and supporters of this surgical sub-speciality.

The annual AUGIS meeting brings together consultants and trainee surgeons, along with nurses and upper allied health professionals, with an interest in Upper Gastrointestinal surgery. Its 2016 programme, which will run from the 22nd – 23rd September, aims to improve the delivery, results and outcome of surgical treatment for conditions affecting the oesophagus, stomach, duodenum, pancreas, liver and biliary tract.

Nichola Coates, Speciality Manager at AUGIS, commented: “We’re really excited to hold our 2016 annual meeting in Leeds. We last visited the area in 1997 – where the conference was held in nearby Headingley. We wanted our 19th annual event to be the most attractive yet, so it was vital to choose a city that would appeal to an increasing number of delegates, as well as a unique venue such as the Royal Armouries.”

She continued: “We were drawn to Leeds because of its diverse and vibrant atmosphere. Its hotel accommodation and ever growing range of food and drink venues are sure pulls to attract a variety of delegates with different budget requirements. Once we had chosen Leeds as our conference city, ConferenceLeeds was instrumental in helping us put our pitch together to present to our Council.”
