Young artists scoop prizes in schools art competition

Three budding artists from local primary schools in Wigan have scooped top prizes in a school art competition organised jointly by Barratt Homes Manchester and David Wilson Homes (DWH)) North West.

Pupils at St Aidan’s Catholic Primary, Winstanley County Primary and St Cuthbert’s Catholic Primary, have each won a £200 cash prize for their school, and will have their artwork proudly exhibited on the walls of Barratt and DWH’s luxury show homes at Blundell’s Wood on Foundry Lane, Wigan.

Over 200 entries were received from local primary schools situated near to the development; pupils were challenged to capture the picturesque and nature-filled woods that lie adjacent to the new homes, in a medium of their choice – either paintings, drawings or photography – as long as it captured a “woodland” theme.

The competition comprised of three separate age categories to allow a wide age range of children to get involved: Reception and Year 1 was won by Emilia Winstanley, aged 5, (St Aidan’s), Years 2 & 3 was won by Macey Speakman, aged 8 (St Cuthbert’s) and Years 4, 5 and 6 was won by Lucy Hill, aged 9, from (Winstanley).

Barratt Homes Sales Director, Michaela Lancaster, said, “We were truly delighted with the volume and the quality of the submissions we received and thank each and every pupil who took the time to enter. It was clear that the schools had taken on the challenge with great care and enthusiasm, and it was a pleasure, but very difficult to judge.”

DWH North West Sales Manager, Michelle Shaw, added, “Our new homes are located right next to the most wonderful woodland area which is full of natural beauty. Its stunning variety of trees attracts an abundance of wildlife, so the artwork will really complement the surroundings, and give our show homes a special, personal touch.”

Blundell’s Wood was last year awarded the prestigious title of ‘Best Large Housing Development of the Year’ in Wigan council’s Building Excellence Awards – and has also featured on BBC TV show, The Sunday Politics programme. Its award locally, coupled with its coveted national five star build accreditation status, has led to unprecedented sales – many achieved thanks to Help to Buy.
