Local housebuilder demonstrates commitment to future talent
Barratt Developments Yorkshire West, which includes both Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes, has demonstrated its commitment to the future of construction through delivering career talks at a local college. The talks, which took place at Notre Dame Catholic Sixth Form College in Leeds, further developed Barratt’s drive to recruit the region’s best talent, with the company having recently appointed a number of apprentices as part of its apprenticeship scheme in late 2015.
The talks, which were delivered to over 40 students aged between 16 and 19 addressed the diversity of a career in construction, the growing demand within the housebuilding sector and the career paths available for those leaving school. The hour long sessions were delivered by Managing Director of Barratt Developments Yorkshire West, Ian Ruthven, with assistance from Sales Manager Stacey Berkeley, Accountant Rachel Pollitt and Engineering Coordinator Daria Matkowska.
Ian Ruthven, Managing Director at Barratt Developments Yorkshire West, commented:
“Within both our organisation and our industry as a whole, it’s vital that we continue to attract the brightest young talent. Here at Barratt, we’re very proud of our reputation for internal progression, with team members such as Rachel and Stacey, who have both progressed through the ranks of the company. Likewise, we’re extremely proud that we attract the very brightest graduate talent, which can be seen in Daria’s case, as she joined us following the completion of her degree in Architectural Engineering at The University of Leeds. We hope that events like these at Notre Dame College inspire the future stars of our industry, and provide some much needed guidance to students about to head into the competitive working world.”
Liz Crick, Careers Coordinator at Notre Dame College, commented:
“It’s been great to have Ian and the team from Barratt Developments in to speak to some of our students and explain what’s available to our leavers when it comes to careers within the housebuilding and construction industries. The insight provided in the sessions will help our students to make informed judgements on their future careers, which will hopefully be long and prosperous.”
Barratt Developments’ Apprenticeship Programme has been recognised by industry bodies as the best of its kind and last year won the CITB Apprenticeship Awards, the Top 100 Employers, Apprenticeship National Service Awards and the BT Award for Macro Employer of the Year.
