Making changes in your life
Getting the work / life balance ratio right isn’t an easy feat. The compounding stress from the never-ending workday can be damaging; in regards to relationships, health and overall happiness. It is important for us to understand and reflect on the areas in our lives that we aren’t happy with and make the relevant changes to lead to a healthier lifestyle.
Due to the fact that the majority of our time is spent at work, our jobs appear to have the biggest impact on how we evaluate our personal happiness. Although many people believe they have mastered the art of juggling a full-time job with a happy and fulfilling life, a whopping 94% of working professionals said, in a Harvard Business School survey, that they spent more than 50 hours per week working. And, nearly half, said they worked more than 65 hours a week.
According to the Mental Health Foundation Survey, one third of respondents felt unhappy or very unhappy about the time they devote to work, and more than 40% of employees are neglecting other aspects of their life as a result.
Many companies are beginning to understand however that by looking after their employees - providing them with workplace benefits and creating an enjoyable working environment - they will achieve higher levels of retention, productivity and overall happiness. BGL Group is one such company. Headquartered in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, with offices spreading into London, Yorkshire and the North East, the market-leading insurance group offers its employees many benefits to improve work/life balance, including flexible working hours, career development, an on-site gym and restaurants, boasting a repertoire of healthy gourmet meals at subsidised prices.
