Building on Success
Glendale Engineering possibly isn’t a company name that you may have heard of, but names like Asda, Aldi, Toys R Us and the RVI Hospital probably are.
You might be surprised to hear that Glendale Engineering who have been based in Milfield then Wooler for the past 32 years have provided the structural capabilities to make light of all of these projects that have been thrown at them.
Many locals will know Glendale Engineering as manufacturers of agricultural sheds and cattle, sheep and pig equipment but most would be surprised to hear that they have also provided the design, manufacture and build of the gigantic Asda superstore in Ashington and the helipad at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.
From humble beginnings to a 30,000 square foot building in Wooler and an additional site in Hexham, the company have gone from strength to strength, recently winning an exclusive and sought after contract to manufacture and erect the structural steel for two blocks of student accommodation in Jesmond, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. This project alone involves 775 tonnes of steel to be manufactured at the Wooler site.
Glendale Engineering is a major employer in the area, currently employing 55 members of full time staff and five young people on the National Apprenticeships scheme.
Gordon & Graeme Wilson established the company in 1984, Gordon said “When we first started the company in 1984 it was just me and Graeme and two welders – We could never have dreamed that 32 years later we would be able to employ 55 people and give the opportunity to these apprentices.”
Keen to showcase and grow the business, Glendale Engineering recently commissioned a new website by local design and marketing agency Lazy Grace. Paul McKenna, FD of Glendale Engineering said “We are aware that people in the local vicinity know who we are, but we didn’t feel that the multitude of projects that we work on was being showcased well enough. As a local company with a great reputation for getting things done, it was an obvious choice to enlist the specialist marketing and design skills of lazy grace to help us promote our wide range of services to a larger market”
Ian McAllister of lazy grace said “When Gordon and Paul first approached us, it was easy to see the potential results that we could help them to achieve by providing a clear and concise web presence. Working with them has been a pleasure and it’s been a fascinating process to see the scale of projects that they have worked on”.
Now with a new website, Gordon, Graeme and Paul are planning to the future. “We don’t want to limit ourselves to a North East market – with our fresh new web presence, we are looking to expand Nationally and continue to recruit enthusiastic and committed people along the way.”
