Surrey County Council in £160m extension of highways project

Property and construction group Kier are set to deliver a further £160m worth of highways maintenance and improvements in Surrey.

The group, which is headquartered in Bedfordshire, has been awarded the contract by Surrey County Council as an extension to its current agreement that began in 2011.

This new four-year agreement will run from April 2017 to March 2021 and will see Kier complement its current maintenance work with the development of a Surrey Highway skill centre to provide training and apprenticeships.

Kier has worked with the council since 2013 after it acquired services firm May Gurney, who were awarded the highways contract originally.

Haydn Mursell, Kier’s Chief Executive, commented: “Kier has forged a strong working relationship with Surrey County Council over the past five years.

“This contract reinforces Kier’s presence in the local authority market and further demonstrates the benefits of recent acquisitions, which have strengthened the Group’s highways services and maintenance offering and helped to establish Kier as the market leader in this sector.

“These awards further underpin the strength of the combined Construction and Services order book which currently stands at approximately £9bn.”
