Kier Property acquires former Newcastle nightclub to develop student accommodation

Kier Property has acquired the former Liquid Envy nightclub site, on New Bridge Street, in Newcastle city centre.

The developers will regenerate the site by opening a student accommodation site, comprising of 329 bedrooms and 5,000sq ft of retail and leisure space.

The scheme, which boasts a gross development value of £37m, will be constructed by Gateshead-based Robertson Construction. Built on a phased basis, final completion is expected in September 2017.

Kier Property, the property arm of residential, construction and services provider Kier Group plc, has a history of delivering student accommodation, having opened 264 student bedrooms in Glasgow last summer.

Tom Gilman, Kier Property managing director for the north, said: “This acquisition forms part of our UK-wide strategy to acquire land and property in order to deliver a full range of direct-let student facilities, which we will then retain as an investment.

“The New Bridge Street student scheme builds on our successful track record in the north, and particularly in Newcastle, where we delivered the new Motel One hotel on High Bridge in December 2015, and where we are North Tyneside Council’s development partner for the Swans scheme in Wallsend.”

It is currently unknown whether the site will serve students attending Northumbria University or Newcastle University.
